How to calculate CPM

A CPM calculator is most useful when the input relationship is visible. Start with the two numbers you know, select the missing metric, and check the formula summary before using the result in a media plan or report.

1

Choose the missing value

Use Calculate CPM when you know an amount and impression count. Choose Calculate ad spend when you know the CPM rate and impressions, or Calculate impressions when you have a budget and CPM.

2

Enter two positive numbers

Use the full amount for the campaign or revenue period and the matching impression count. Impressions must be greater than zero, and the CPM rate must be greater than zero when it is an input.

3

Review the calculation

The calculator validates the fields, applies the standard cost-per-1,000-impressions relationship, and shows the result with a readable formula. It does not infer missing platform data or exchange rates.

4

Use the result carefully

Compare like-for-like campaigns, placements, dates, currencies, and impression definitions. A CPM result describes exposure cost or revenue; it does not replace click, conversion, viewability, or profit analysis.

The CPM formula explained

CPM stands for cost per mille, where mille means one thousand. The same formula can describe an advertiser's cost or a publisher's revenue, as long as the amount and impressions refer to the same period and measurement definition.

CPM calculator formula

CPM = amount ÷ impressions × 1,000

Dividing by impressions finds the amount per single impression. Multiplying by 1,000 expresses that rate as a comparable cost per thousand impressions.

Find CPM amount ÷ impressions × 1,000
Find ad spend CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000
Find impressions amount ÷ CPM × 1,000
WORKED EXAMPLE

Example: US$1,200 and 100,000 impressions

If a campaign spends US$1,200 and receives 100,000 impressions, divide the amount by the impressions and multiply by 1,000.

US$1,200 100,000 1,000 = US$12.00 CPM

The result means US$12.00 for each 1,000 impressions under this simple calculation. It does not mean US$12.00 per click or per conversion.

Three ways to use a CPM calculator

The calculation mode tells the tool which value to solve. This avoids the common mistake of entering three numbers that do not belong to the same campaign and then treating one of them as the answer.

MODE 01

Calculate CPM from amount and impressions

Use total spend or total ad revenue plus the number of impressions. This is useful for campaign reporting, publisher yield review, or comparing placements with the same measurement window.

CPM = amount ÷ impressions × 1,000
MODE 02

Calculate ad spend from CPM and impressions

Use a planned CPM rate and an expected impression count to estimate the amount required. Treat the result as a planning estimate until the platform confirms delivery and billing.

Amount = CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000
MODE 03

Calculate impressions from amount and CPM

Use a budget and a CPM assumption to estimate how many impressions that amount could buy. Actual delivery can differ because of auctions, pacing, inventory, targeting, and fees.

Impressions = amount ÷ CPM × 1,000

CPM vs CPC vs eCPM

A cost per impression calculator answers a different question from a CPC calculator or an eCPM report. Keep the denominator and the business question visible when comparing marketing performance.

Comparison of CPM, CPC, and eCPM metrics
Metric Calculation basis What it helps answer
CPM Amount ÷ impressions × 1,000 How much did 1,000 impressions cost or earn?
CPC Amount ÷ clicks How much did each click cost or earn?
eCPM Revenue ÷ impressions × 1,000 What is the effective revenue per 1,000 impressions across a monetization method?

When a CPM calculator helps

CPM is a compact way to normalize advertising cost or revenue when impression volume changes. It is most useful as one part of a wider review, alongside reach, frequency, clicks, conversions, viewability, and profit.

A

Advertisers and media buyers

Calculate the delivered CPM for a campaign by comparing the amount billed with impressions served. Use like-for-like dates, placements, devices, audiences, and billing definitions before deciding which ad group performed better. A lower CPM can improve reach efficiency, but it does not prove stronger traffic or sales.

B

Publishers and website owners

Treat Amount as advertising revenue when reviewing a page, site, or reporting period. A CPM calculation can make different impression volumes easier to compare, while fill rate, ad format, geography, seasonality, invalid traffic, and revenue share still affect the final amount.

C

Creators and video channels

Use CPM to understand a reported advertising rate or build a simple scenario. For a YouTube CPM calculator estimate, match the platform's definition carefully: monetized playbacks, ad impressions, total views, and creator revenue are not automatically the same number.

A CPM calculator estimates the math, not the platform outcome

Display advertising, social campaigns, connected TV, and video platforms can define impressions, billable events, revenue share, taxes, and fees differently. Use the calculator for a transparent estimate, then reconcile it with the platform report or invoice. Do not use a CPM rate by itself to promise creator income, campaign reach, or conversion performance.

CPM calculator limitations

The formula is simple, but the inputs come from real reporting systems with different rules. These boundaries help keep a quick CPM calculation from being mistaken for a forecast or a guaranteed rate.

Currency is a display choice

Selecting USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, or AUD changes the currency label only. This calculator does not perform exchange-rate conversion. Convert all inputs to a common currency yourself before comparing campaigns.

Rounded output can hide tiny differences

The calculator keeps the numeric input for the calculation and rounds the displayed result for readability. For a financial reconciliation, keep the source report's precision and use the unrounded values where available.

Impressions are not clicks

CPM measures exposure, not engagement. A campaign can have an efficient CPM and weak click-through rate, or a higher CPM and stronger conversion quality. Add CPC, CTR, CPA, and conversion data when making a business decision.

Platform definitions still matter

Different reports may separate served impressions, viewable impressions, monetized playbacks, eligible impressions, or estimated revenue. The calculator cannot resolve those definitions for you, so use matching source fields.

CPM calculator FAQ

These answers cover the most common ways to calculate CPM, budget, and impressions without confusing the result with a platform forecast.

What is CPM?

CPM means cost per mille, or cost per 1,000 impressions. It expresses an advertising cost or revenue amount on a common impression basis. CPM is not the same as cost per click, cost per conversion, or a guaranteed publisher payout.

How do I calculate CPM?

Divide the total amount by the number of impressions, then multiply by 1,000: CPM = amount ÷ impressions × 1,000. For example, US$1,200 divided by 100,000 impressions and multiplied by 1,000 equals US$12.00 CPM.

How do I calculate ad spend from CPM and impressions?

Multiply the CPM rate by the impression count, then divide by 1,000: amount = CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000. Enter the CPM and impressions in the Calculate ad spend mode to see the result with the selected currency label.

How do I calculate impressions from a budget and CPM?

Divide the amount by the CPM rate, then multiply by 1,000: impressions = amount ÷ CPM × 1,000. This is an estimate based on the rate you enter; auction prices, pacing, targeting, fees, and inventory can change actual delivery.

Is CPM the same as cost per impression?

They describe the same cost relationship at different scales. Cost per impression is the amount for one impression, while CPM multiplies that unit cost by 1,000 so campaigns with different volumes are easier to compare.

Can I use this as a YouTube CPM calculator?

Yes, you can use the same math for a YouTube scenario when you have a comparable amount and impression definition. Do not assume total views, monetized playbacks, ad impressions, and creator revenue are interchangeable; confirm which fields the report uses first.

What is the difference between CPM and CPC?

CPM uses impressions as the denominator and answers the cost or revenue question for 1,000 exposures. CPC uses clicks as the denominator and answers the cost or revenue question for one click. One metric cannot replace the other.

Does this CPM calculator convert currencies?

No. The currency selector changes the displayed label only; it does not fetch exchange rates or convert amounts. Select the currency that matches your inputs, or convert all source numbers separately before calculating.
